Ryu Hyun-jin, who was hit by a ball, appears as a top player..."Surprising speed recovery from bruising"
Coach Jang Se-hong said, "I am no longer afraid of arm pain, such as playing bullpen pitching after surgery."
Ryu Hyun-jin, who started the visiting game against the Cleveland Guardians on August 8 and was injured after being hit inside his right knee by a batter's 157km/h strong ball, will start the home game against the Chicago Cubs on the 14th. Ryu Hyun-jin underwent an X-ray test immediately after his injury, but no abnormalities appeared, and he was able to play the scheduled rotation as he was performing normal training as swelling quickly fell out.
Coach Jang Se-hong, who is in charge of Ryu Hyun-jin's personal training at the Toronto Blue Jays, watched the player's pitch with a prayer in the away dugout in Cleveland on the day Ryu Hyun-jin started. Coach Jang's heart was pounding hard because he pitched a no-hit pitch that did not give up any hits until the fourth inning. Then, he was said to have been quite shocked to witness Ryu Hyun-jin fall after being hit by a ball hit by Oscar Gonzalez in the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs and first base.
"As soon as Ryu Hyun-jin was hit by the ball, there was a very loud 'bump' sound inside the quiet baseball stadium. It sounded so loud that my heart was pounding. It was the first time I saw a player complaining of such severe pain. "The injury was really painful at the time because he overwhelmed the opponent's batters with perfect control before the injury."
Ryu Hyun-jin paid a lot of attention to Cleveland and did his best to prepare for the game as he returned to the big leagues against the Baltimore Orioles for the first time in 14 months on the 2nd, but became a losing pitcher with nine hits and four runs in five innings. Coach Jang says Toronto's pitching coach Pete Walker showed an admiringly perfect pitch from the time he warmed up in the bullpen before the start of the game.
"The pitching coach who saw Ryu Hyun-jin's bullpen pitching was greatly impressed. He even applauded, saying, "It was the best pitch I've seen recently." In particular, fastballs and changeups were excellent. He finished his bullpen pitching in almost perfect condition and headed to the dugout to take the mound."
Ryu Hyun-jin was able to regain his confidence over time as he no longer played without fear or worry about arm pain. Above all, the routine of pitching the bullpen on the fourth day after taking the mound and playing the actual game on the second day was hopeful.
"Previously, Ryu Hyun-jin was unable to perform bullpen pitching due to elbow pain. I know that he hasn't been pitching in the bullpen since the Dodgers days. At that time, his elbow condition was difficult to play bullpen pitching. It was impossible to check the sense of the game or balance through bullpen pitching before taking the mound because he was in an elbow state enough to disappear his ligament, and the recovery speed was slow once he took the mound. The biggest change since the surgery is that he will pitch the bullpen before starting the game. It's a possible routine because you've recovered that much of your health."
He showed some disappointing results against Baltimore, but as he prepared for the game, Ryu Hyun-jin increased the number of revolutions of fastballs and curves and was able to prepare for the Cleveland match with confidence.
"If you look closely at the scene where Ryu Hyun-jin hits the ball, you will see that he hits the inside of his knee." If it missed, the ball had to hit and bounce inside the knee, but the 157km/h ball hit the inside of the knee and fell at a right angle. In other words, the shock was absorbed into the inside of the knee as it was. For a moment, the pain that had no choice but to fall was followed. Ryu Hyun-jin was in a physical condition that was in full swing until he took the mound in the game, and it was regrettable that he was injured in an overall improved situation such as ball speed."
Immediately after his injury, Ryu Hyun-jin limped down the mound. Fortunately, he was diagnosed with a simple contusion, but the shock did not subside easily.
"When I looked at the injured area, there was a swelling that seemed to contain a baseball. I returned to the away accommodation and put ice on it until 3 or 4 a.m. to relieve the swelling. When a player suffers a bruise, the prognosis varies depending on how the swelling is managed within 24 hours. As I pressed and managed with ice, I saw the bruise spread around 3 a.m. and the swelling fell out. Ryu Hyun-jin started to get better the next day, and on the third day, he worked out his lower body and played running and long toss. We are showing great recovery capabilities again this time."
Even if it is a simple bruise, it is very regrettable that he was injured during the game not long after returning to the big league. Nevertheless, coach Jang Se-hong explained that he was very lucky that the player who was hit by a strong ball played the scheduled rotation.
"Even within the team, Ryu Hyun-jin seems to be very surprised at the speed of his recovery. "As the season moves toward the second half, the ranking fight is fierce, so the players are sensitive and there is a great war of nerves about the position, and it seems impressive to see Ryu Hyun-jin recover quickly from the injury and play the rotation."
Coach Jang Se-hong says he feels his arm is improving every time he continues to take the mound, so he has higher expectations for Ryu Hyun-jin next season than for the rest of the season.
